Paper Trails is an exhibition consisting of two animations, Inquisitive Vignettes and Traces. These animations, one of which is projected on and accompanied by a player piano, examine the creation and interpretation of our cultural and personal histories. We construct these narratives from a variety of records, whether they are memories or physical artifacts, and while technology enables the ephemeral to be made tangible, the following questions remain. How much has been lost, preserved, excised or manipulated to alter the narrative, and what traces have been left

The \u3cem\u3eGlucksberg\u3c/em\u3e Renaissance: Substantive Due Process since \u3cem\u3eLawrence v. Texas\u3c/em\u3e

On their faces, Washington v. Glucksberg and Lawrence v. Texas seem to have little in common. In Glucksberg, the Supreme Court upheld a law prohibiting assisted suicide and rejected a claim that the Constitution protects a right to die ; in Lawrence, the Court struck down a law prohibiting homosexual sodomy and embraced a claim that the Constitution protects homosexual persons\u27 choices to engage in intimate relationships. Thus, in both subject matter and result, Lawrence and Glucksberg appear far apart. The Lawrence Court, however, faced a peculiar challenge in reaching its decision, and its response to that challenge brings Lawrence and Glucksberg into conflict. Only seventeen years before Lawrence, the Court in Bowers v. Hardwick faced essentially the same claim as in Lawrence, but reached the opposite conclusion-that is, Bowers declared that the Constitution provides no protection for homosexual sodomy. The Lawrence Court, therefore, had to justify overruling Bowers while simultaneously supporting its own conclusion

The Rocketdyne Multifunction Tester. Part 2: Operation of a Radial Magnetic Bearing as an Excitation Source

The operation of the magnetic bearing used as an excitation source in the Rocketdyne Multifunction Tester is described. The tester is scheduled for operation during the summer of 1990. The magnetic bearing can be used in two control modes: (1) open loop mode, in which the magnetic bearing operates as a force actuator; and (2) closed loop mode, in which the magnetic bearing provides shaft support. Either control mode can be used to excite the shaft; however, response of the shaft in the two control modes is different due to the alteration of the eigenvalues by closed loop mode operation. A rotordynamic model is developed to predict the frequency response of the tester due to excitation in either control mode. Closed loop mode excitation is shown to be similar to the excitation produced by a rotating eccentricity in a conventional bearing. Predicted frequency response of the tester in the two control modes is compared, and the maximum response is shown to be the same for the two control modes when synchronous unbalance loading is not considered. The analysis shows that the response of this tester is adequate for the extraction of rotordynamic stiffness, damping, and inertia coefficients over a wide range of test article stiffnesses

Suppression of Subsynchronous Vibration in the SSME HPFTP

Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) High Pressure Fuel Turbopump (HPFTP) hot-fire dynamic data evaluation and rotordynamic analysis both confirm that two of the most significant turbopump attributes in determining susceptibility to subsynchronous vibration are impeller interstage seal configuration and rotor sideload resulting from turbine turnaround duct configuration and hot gas manifold. Recent hot-fire testing has provided promising indications that the incorporation of roughened damping seals at the impeller interstages may further increase the stability margin of this machine. A summary of the analysis which led to the conclusion that roughened seals would enhance the stability margin is presented along with a correlation of the analysis with recent test data

Taking the English Right to Counsel Seriously in American Civil Gideon Litigation

Courts have rejected a right to counsel for indigent civil litigants under the U.S. Constitution. But in some American states, that right arguably already exists as a matter of common law, albeit derived from centuries-old English common and statutory law. This Article analyzes the viability of arguments for incorporating the old English right to counsel in the twenty-seven American states that continue to recognize old English common and statutory law as a source of binding authority. Such originalist arguments may be appealing to judges who are more willing to revive a historically based right than establish a new right based in concepts such as due process
